Create Manga Character Turnaround Sheets
Manga turnaround sheets (settei) are a production art staple — they provide the visual bible for assistants and guest artists to draw characters consistently chapter after chapter. Unlike Western comic sheets, manga turnarounds emphasize clean black-and-white rendering and precise hair/eye detail documentation.
- 01
Set up the settei format
Traditional manga settei use A4 landscape with horizontal proportion lines. Set your generation canvas to match this professional format.
- 02
Generate B&W views with screentone notation
Create front, side, and back views in clean inking. Annotate where screentone shading should be applied (which areas are 10%, 20%, etc.).
- 03
Build the hair reference section
Manga hair is the single most important consistency element. Generate close-ups showing how each hair section flows from every angle.
- 04
Create the expression chart
Standard manga expression sheets include: neutral, happy, angry, sad, surprised, embarrassed, and chibi/comedy variants.
- 05
Add school uniform or key outfit variations
Many manga characters appear in multiple outfits. Generate at least casual and formal/uniform variants.
- Manga settei should be clean enough to photocopy — avoid grey tones in line art
- Include exact measurements for key features: "eyes are 1.5x standard proportion, nose is simplified to two dots"
- Hair highlight placement (the white shine streak) must be documented — it is a signature element
- Note the character height in both heads (proportion) and centimeters (world-building)
