Create Fantasy Character Reference Sheets
Fantasy character reference sheets need to capture not just how a character looks, but who they are within the world — their faction, their magic, their history told through visual details. A great fantasy ref sheet is part character design document, part world-building artifact.
- 01
Establish the world context
Define the fantasy setting style: high fantasy, dark fantasy, fairy tale, mythological. This context shapes every visual decision from armor style to color palette.
- 02
Generate full-body and detail views
Create front, side, and back views plus isolated close-ups of: face, weapon, armor details, magical focus items, and any insignias or faction symbols.
- 03
Build the equipment catalog
Generate each piece of equipment separately on a plain background: sword with dimensions, shield with heraldry, potion belt, spellbook, etc.
- 04
Create the color and material reference
Generate flat color swatches and material samples: "leather texture this shade," "chainmail this color," "enchanted glow this hue."
- 05
Add the character backstory visual
Generate a small scene or vignette that captures the character's origin or motivation — a burning village, a sacred grove, a throne room confrontation.
- Fantasy ref sheets should include the character at different "power levels" — fresh adventurer vs. battle-hardened veteran
- Document which parts of the costume are removable vs. always present (a cloak can be doffed, but a tattoo cannot)
- Include a size comparison chart with other races/creatures in your setting
